She is best known for the Miracle's Boys and award-winning titles Newbery Honor, Brown Girl Dreaming, After Tupac and D Foster, Feathers and Show Way. After taking the title of Youth Poet from 2015 to 2017, she was honored by the Library of Congress as the National Ambassador for Children's Literature for 2018-2019. She was named MacArthur Fellow in 2020 .
